Choosing
an Attorney
Consider
the following Guidelines
When Choosing an Attorney:
- Your attorney
should demonstrate a good knowledge of the law.
- Fees
should be clearly explained and set forth in any written contract
for legal services.
- You
should be able to communicate effectively with each other. No
matter how famous or skilled the attorney may be, you will be
at a serious disadvantage if you cannot communicate effectively
with your lawyer.
- Whenever
possible, retain an attorney familiar with the jurisdiction (locality),
or court where your case is or will be pending. Your attorney's
reputation with the court and other lawyers play a large role
in the success of your case.
We
Recommend You Avoid These Types of Attorneys
- Avoid
an attorney who will not take the time to discuss the basic aspects
of the law or facts surrounding in your case.
- Avoid
an attorney who "talks down" to you.
- Avoid
an attorney who indicates that he or she can guarantee results
in a particular case.
- Avoid
an attorney who constantly compares himself with other attorneys,
particularly one who makes disparaging remarks about other attorneys,
judges or judicial officials.
- Avoid any
attorney you feel is 'shady". If you feel uneasy, you should
consider a different attorney.
